DSO, Dubai Municipality, be’ah Oman, RAK Waste Management Agency, MEPCO, Al Qaryan Group, Bee’ah, Enviroserve, Dulsco, Imdaad and Union Paper Mills among the winners
The winners of the 2nd cycle of the exclusive Middle East Waste & Recycling Awards (MEWAR Awards) were announced Thursday, 21st November, at a Gala Dinner and Ceremony held at The Ritz-Carlton JBR, Dubai, UAE.
MEWAR Awards – the only dedicated initiative of its kind in the region – honoured the best performers across 16 categories and a total of 31 awards and certificates of recognition were presented at a well-attended function.
Key dignitaries who attended the awards ceremony included H.E. Eng. Saif Al Shara, Assistant Undersecretary, Sustainable Communities Sector, Ministry of Climate Change and Environment UAE (MOCCAE); H.E. Dr. Salem Khalfan Al Kaabi, General Manager, Abu Dhabi Waste Management Centre – Tadweer; Eng. Rabaa Al Awar, Head of Waste Management, MOCCAE, Mrs. Sara Ali, Environmental Researcher, MOCCAE, among others.
This year, MEWAR Awards introduced a new initiative to recognise one key personality who has had a positive influence on the sector’s progress in the region. And H.E. Dr. Salem Al Kaabi was recognised for his commitment and invaluable contribution to the development of the waste management sector in Abu Dhabi. The token of appreciation was presented to H.E. Dr. Salem Al Kaabi by Mr. Tighe Noonan, President, Dulevo International and Mr. John Colley, Chairman, Intercare. Dulevo was also the Gold Sponsor for the event.
Presented by Waste & Recycling Middle East & Africa magazine, MEWAR Awards is a celebration of success in adopting best practices in the waste and recycling industry. The awards acknowledge excellence in business best practices and recognise outstanding individuals and organisations that have demonstrated leadership and innovation and are playing an important role in contributing to the vision of various Governments in the region for a greener future.
The entries were evaluated by a grand jury panel of eminent international professionals from the industry.
There has been a 20 percent increase in nominations in the second cycle of MEWAR Awards. Speaking about the growth in nominations and participation this year, the Managing Director at Media Fusion, Taher Patrawala commented: “We are delighted to see enthusiasm in the sector. Companies across the Middle East involved in waste management and recycling were keen to showcase their latest solutions and achievements and gain industry recognition. We are progressing towards the attainment of our objective of raising the industry standards.”
Waste management company Bee’ah, Dubai Municipality and Dubai Silicon Oasis (DSO) scooped up 2 awards each at the event. Dubai Municipality won the “Best Municipal Waste Diversion Programme” trophy, while Bee’ah won the “Waste Management Company of the Year” award.
Dubai Municipality also beat off competition to win the “Best Public Awareness Campaign/Programme” award as well, with the judges lauding the entity for continuously creating ways to create awareness among the public on different waste streams. Their submission clearly demonstrates the multiple campaigns being implemented, frequency of implementation, as well as providing the views of the public regarding their campaigns.
Waste management company Dulsco won the coveted “Environmental/CSR Initiative of the Year” Award for its initiative, which was appreciated by the jury.
Al Qaryan Group, Saudi Arabia, walked away with the “Metals Recycling Company of the Year” trophy for the second year in a row. Middle East Paper Company (MEPCO) won the “Paper Recycling Company of the Year” Award for the second time as well.
Ras Al Khaimah Waste Management Agency made an impact as the Executive Director Eng. Sonia Nasser won the “Personality of the Year (Waste Management)”, while Eng. Sami Safran, CEO, MEPCO was declared “Personality of the Year (Recycling)”.
This year too, Enviroserve walked away with the “Electrical & Electronic Equipment Recycling Company of the Year – WEEE Processor” trophy. Be’ah, Oman won the “Medical Waste Management Best Practice” Award.
Winnow Solutions won the “Technology Innovation of the Year” Award for its innovative technology that helps significantly reduce food waste in the hospitality sector, thereby saving companies a lot of money and helping reduce waste significantly.
Overall, 31 awards and certificates of recognition were presented across 16 categories. The second cycle of the awards received nominations from many Middle Eastern countries and across various sectors including waste management, recycling, healthcare and hospitality, among others.
